Introduction of common wine bottle specifications

For the convenience of production, transportation and drinking, the most common wine bottle on the market has always been the 750ml standard bottle (Standard). However, in order to meet the personalized needs of consumers (such as being convenient to carry, more conducive to collection, etc.), various specifications of wine bottles such as 187.5 ml, 375 ml and 1.5 liters have also been developed. They are usually available in multiples or factors of 750ml and have their own names.

For the convenience of production, transportation and drinking, the most common wine bottle on the market has always been the 750ml standard bottle (Standard). However, in order to meet the individual needs of consumers (such as being convenient to carry, more conducive to collection, etc.), various specifications of wine bottles such as 187.5 ml, 375 ml and 1.5 liters have been developed, and their capacity is usually 750 ml. Multiples or factors, and have their own names.

Here are some common wine bottle specifications

1. Half Quarter/Topette: 93.5ml

The capacity of a half-quart bottle is only about 1/8 of a standard bottle, and all the wine is poured into an ISO wine glass, which can only fill about half of it. It is usually used for sample wine for tasting.

2. Piccolo/Split: 187.5ml

“Piccolo” means “little” in Italian. The Piccolo bottle has a capacity of 187.5 ml, which is equivalent to 1/4 of the standard bottle, so it is also called a quart bottle (Quarter Bottle, “quarter” means “1/4″). Bottles of this size are more common in Champagne and other sparkling wines. Hotels and airplanes often serve this small-capacity sparkling wine for consumers to drink.

3. Half/Demi: 375ml

As the name suggests, a half bottle is half the size of a standard bottle and has a capacity of 375ml. At present, half-bottles are more common in the market, and many red, white and sparkling wines have this specification. At the same time, half-bottled wine is also popular among consumers due to its advantages of easy portability, less waste and lower price.

4. Jennie bottle: 500ml

Jenny bottle capacity is between half bottle and standard bottle. It is less common and is mainly used in sweet white wines from regions such as Sauternes and Tokaj.

5. Standard bottle: 750ml

The standard bottle is the most common and popular size and can fill 4-6 glasses of wine.

6. Magnum: 1.5 liters

The Magnum bottle is equivalent to 2 standard bottles, and its name means “large” in Latin. Many wineries in the Bordeaux and Champagne regions have launched Magnum bottled wines, such as the 1855 first growth Chateau Latour (also known as Chateau Latour), the fourth growth Dragon Boat Manor (Chateau Beychevelle) and St. Saint-Emilion First Class A, Chateau Ausone, etc.
Compared with standard bottles, the average contact area of the wine in the Magnum bottle with oxygen is smaller, so the wine matures more slowly and the wine quality is more stable. Coupled with the characteristics of small output and sufficient weight, Magnum bottles have always been favored by the market, and some 1.5-liter top wines are the “darlings” of wine collectors, and they are eye-catching in the auction market.
