Most wines are packaged in glass bottles. Glass bottles are inert packaging that is impermeable, inexpensive, and sturdy and portable, although it has the disadvantage of being heavy and fragile. However, at this stage they are still the packaging of choice for many manufacturers and consumers.
The main disadvantage of glass bottles is that they are heavy and hard. Weight adds to the shipping cost of wines, while rigidity means they have limited space utilization. Once the wine is opened, more oxygen enters the bottle, which can damage the quality of the wine unless it can be artificially sucked out or replaced by an inert gas.
Plastic bottles and bags are lighter than glass bottles, and wines packaged in plastic boxes are consumed more quickly, so they avoid more air. Unfortunately, plastic packaging does not prevent the infiltration of air like glass bottles, so the shelf life of wine in plastic packaging will be greatly reduced. This type of packaging would be a good choice for most wines, as most wines are usually consumed quickly. However, for those wines that require long-term storage and maturation, glass bottles are still the best packaging choice for them.
